How do I get the DVLA to release a Registration?

So, you’ve spotted the perfect registration. Maybe it’s your initials, a funny combo, or something that just screams you. But… it’s not for sale. It’s not on a car. It’s not anywhere. What now?

Here’s the secret: the DVLA might actually have it, just sitting in a dusty digital drawer. And if you ask nicely — they might let it out.

Option 1: Ask them via their Website

Head over to the DVLA’s official contact form here:
👉 DVLA Number Plate Request Form

Choose the option to ask about a registration, and in your message, include:

  • The registration you’re after (e.g. "I’d love to buy AB12 CDE")
  • Why you want it (optional, but hey, passion never hurts)
  • Your contact details

Option 2: Slide Into Their DMs

If you're more of a social butterfly, try messaging them on Facebook:
👉 DVLA on Facebook

They will respond (although usually with a link to the form above)— and sometimes faster than you'd expect.

Cross Your Fingers & Wait

There’s no guarantee, but if the reg hasn’t been released yet, the DVLA might add it to a future auction, unfortunately they don't just release them to their website so you can buy them, so be prepared to have to fight it out under their timed auctions.

TL;DR: Ask the DVLA nicely here or on Facebook. You might just get lucky.

Happy reg hunting! 🚗✨
